Download TDSDownload MSDSSunset Yellow FCF is a synthetic azo dye with the chemical formula C16H10N2Na2O7S2 and molecular weight of 452.363 g/mol. It is supplied by Tradeasia International as a high-purity product (minimum 99.9%) in the form of an orange to dark red crystalline powder. This colorant is widely utilized across multiple industrial sectors, particularly in the cosmetics, food, and textiles industries, where it serves as a functional colorant and pigment component.
Physically, Sunset Yellow FCF exhibits a melting point of 390°C and decomposes upon further heating rather than boiling. The product is odorless with negligible vapor pressure at 20°C, demonstrating minimal volatility under normal storage conditions. It demonstrates good solubility in water (50-100 mg/mL) as well as in pyridine and hot alcohol, making it suitable for various formulation applications. The specific gravity is reported at 0.8 g/cm³. The material is stable under normal conditions and not considered corrosive to glass.
From a health and safety perspective, Sunset Yellow FCF presents moderate hazard concerns requiring appropriate handling measures. It may cause skin inflammation and eye irritation upon contact, and can pose respiratory problems if dust is inhaled. The acute oral toxicity in rats (LD50) is greater than 10 g/kg, indicating relatively low acute oral toxicity. The product is hazardous for aquatic life and should be handled with environmental considerations in mind.
Proper handling requires avoiding dust generation, preventing eye contact, and using appropriate personal protective equipment including safety glasses, lab coats, dust respirators, and gloves. Storage should maintain the container tightly closed in a cool environment, protected from heat and radiation, away from oxidizing agents and acids. In case of accidental spill, solid material should be collected using appropriate tools and the contaminated surface cleaned with water. First aid measures include immediate washing with water for skin contact and at least 15 minutes of continuous eye irrigation for ocular exposure.
The product complies with ISO 11014 standards and UN-GHS requirements (Revision 6, 2015). It is not classified as hazardous under EU regulations or controlled under Canadian WHMIS. HMIS classification indicates Health Hazard: 2, Fire Hazard: 1, and Reactivity: 0. The material is not explosive or particularly flammable, though it may be combustible at high temperatures. Disposal must comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
